Three Things Parents Need to Know About Fortnite Season 4

A new map, new skins and new challenges will keep your kids coming back for (even) more.

Brace for impact, parents. Season 4 is now live in Fortnite, so don’t be surprised if your kids suddenly seem more excited than usual to play (and more needy for your credit card). Here’s what you need to know about this big release.

The Battle Royale map has been altered by a giant comet

The map for Fortnite’s most popular mode, the free-to-play Battle Royale, now has a large impact crater caused by a fallen comet. This means your kids will want to spend extra time playing to get used to all of the changes and refine their battle strategies.

New — but purely optional — content is available for purchase via Battle Pass

A new superhero-themed Battle Pass can be purchased for roughly $10 and offers new cosmetic items, plus the chance to earn a ton more by completing in-game challenges. Those who pay to play will automatically gain access to a few items, as well as 100 tiers of challenges which, when completed, unlock more virtual items, like this awesome Wonder Woman-esque Valor skin. Anyone who wants to skip the challenges and just unlock the extra items immediately can opt to pay $1.50 per tier to make it so.

The non-free version of Fortnite that costs $39.99 was also updated

Fortnite: Save the World’s update also revolves around superheroes, and unlocks a new storyline focused on investigating the comet and recruiting a team of heroes. If your kids are into superheroes and they don’t own this version of the game, they may want it — but if you can convince your kids to wait, the developer plans to release Save the World for free some time later this year.
