Spider-Man has long been a beloved character in the Marvel universe, whether he’s appearing in comics, video games, or on the big screen. Sony Pictures has revealed the first official trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
WARNING: THIS IS GOING TO HAVE AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR SPOILERS; PROCEED WITH CAUTION.
Before we dive into what it is that you need to know about Spider-Man: Far From Home, we need to deal with the uncertainty around Peter Parker’s existence after Infinity War, which came out in May 2018. If you haven’t watched Infinity War, stop reading immediately! I’m about to SERIOUSLY spoil the ending of the film.

Now, at the end of Infinity War, Thanos wiped out half of all existence with the snap of his fingers. (It spawned an excellent Fortnite event, in case you missed it.) Spidey was caught up in that nonsense and faded away to nothingness. There wasn’t a dry eye in the audience.
If you’ve been keeping up with Spider-Man and The Avengers movies (and possibly the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe), you might be confused as to why Peter’s back. There’s no real confirmation for this (yet), but Spider-Man: Far From Home likely takes place after The Avengers: Endgame, which should tie up all of the loose ends created by Infinity War. So, if you and your kid(s) are confused, that’s likely why.
The great thing about Spider-Man’s latest movies is that The Avengers plotline isn’t all that important to enjoying the standalone Spider-Man movies like Homecoming and Far From Home. If you haven’t watched Spider-Man: Homecoming, that’s going to help set up this version of Peter Parker (because he’s not exactly the same as the Peter Parker from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, nor is he the same as The Amazing Spider-Man‘s Peter Parker).
Don’t feel like you need to dive into The Avengers just to watch Spider-Man. Infinity War is a very, very difficult movie to watch with little ones. (I haven’t shown it to my kids yet.) Explaining the destruction of half of the universe as was the wont of one being is, well, a daunting undertaking that might not pan out. Needless to say, Infinity War is going to take a few years for the youngest of our kids to understand, let alone be mature enough to fully digest.
The PG-13 rating on each of the Spider-Man movies is an important footnote — there is violence, explosions, loud noises, and likely some cruder situations that the kids will find themselves in. They’re teenagers, after all, and teens have a tendency to get themselves into a fair bit of trouble. (Especially if that teen’s name is Peter Parker.)
Just as is the case with YouTube and helping your kids make smart content choices online, only you know what will work for your kid(s) in terms of their maturity level(s).
