Pokemon Go: Vote to Decide the Star of February’s Community Day

Thursday, January 23rd, 2020 7:25 am

Will you choose Vulpix, Dratini, Machop, or Rhyhorn?

February’s Pokemon Go Community Day event will take place on February 22, 2020, but unlike previous events, this one is totally unique.

Instead of simply choosing a Pokemon to star in the event, Niantic, Pokemon Go‘s developer, is leaving it up to players to decide which Pokemon will be featured by voting for one of four candidates: Dratini, Machop, Rhyhorn, or Vulpix. You’ll be able to vote for the Pokemon you want to see featured by completing special “Voting-Day Field Research Tasks.”

Here’s how this will work.

On February 1 from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. local time, you’ll be able to find special Voting-Day Field Research Tasks by visiting PokeStops near you (Niantic said every PokeStop will have a Voting-Day task on February 1). There will be four different tasks available to find, with one for each candidate. The tasks will be:

  • Vote for Machop Community Day! Catch 20 Pokemon
  • Vote for Rhyhorn Community Day! Catch 20 Pokemon
  • Vote for Vulpix Community Day! Catch 20 Pokemon
  • Vote for Dratini Community Day! Catch 20 Pokemon

If you collect a Field Research task relating to a candidate you don’t want to vote for, you’ll need to delete it and then visit a different PokeStop to try and find the task related to the Pokemon you do wish to vote for.

When you complete one of these tasks and turn it in, that will count as one “vote” toward the corresponding Pokemon. You’ll be able to turn in multiple tasks on February 1, with each one counting as a separate vote.

Once voting day is over, Niantic will count the total number of votes and then announce the winning Pokemon on February 3.

Each of the four Pokemon will be able to learn a special battle move if they’re selected to star in February’s Community Day event. Vulpix and Alolan Vulpix will learn Weather Ball when evolved into Ninetales, Machop will learn Payback when evolved into Machamp, Rhyhorn will learn Rock Wrecker when evolved into Rhyperior, and Dratini will learn Superpower when evolved into Dragonite. Again, only one of these moves will be available on February 22, depending on which Pokemon wins the vote.

It’s also worth pointing out that Dratini was previously featured in its own Community Day event (so its Shiny form is already available), and Shiny Machop was also previously released. If you’re into collecting Shiny Pokemon, keep that in mind when deciding who to vote for.

Finally, regardless of which Pokemon wins the vote, we know that a special bonus will be in effect during February’s Community Day event: you’ll earn three times the normal amount of Stardust when capturing Pokemon.
