There will be lots to do in the first month of the year.

Trainers, as we look ahead into 2021, there are a variety of events to look forward to in Pokemon Go. Here’s a breakdown of what we can expect in January 2021:

Research Breakthroughs

From January 1 at 1 p.m. PT until February 1 at 1 p.m. PT, you’ll receive an encounter with Chansey each time you achieve a Research Breakthrough. As a reminder, you’ll achieve a Research Breakthrough each time you complete at least one Field Research task on seven different days (it doesn’t have to be seven days in a row).

Raids

Different Pokemon will appear in Tier-5 Raids throughout the month of January. Here’s the calendar!

  • Ho-Oh – From January 1 at 1 p.m. PT until January 5 at 10 a.m. local time. Ho-Oh will have the chance to be Shiny.
  • Genesect – From January 5 at 10 a.m. local time until January 12 at 10 a.m. local time. Genesect will be holding a “Burn Drive” item. We’ll make sure to bring you more information about this item as we learn more. Update (01/05/2021): Genesect’s Pokedex entry has been updated to allow players to keep track of the Genesect “forms” they’ve encountered: Normal, Shock Drive, Burn Drive, Chill Drive, and Douse Drive.
  • Heatran – From January 12 at 10 a.m. local time until January 19 at 10 a.m. local time. Heatran will have the chance to be Shiny.
  • Kyogre and Groudon – January 19 at 10 a.m. local time until January 26 at 10 a.m. local time. Both Pokemon will have the chance to be Shiny.
  • An unannounced Pokemon will begin appearing in Raids on January 26 at 10 a.m. local time. Keep checking back with us for more information!

Mega Raids

In January, Mega Charizard Y, Mega Blastoise, and Mega Abomasnow will appear in Mega Raids. Mega Charizard Y will be more powerful than normal from January 5 at 10 a.m. local time until January 12 at 10 a.m. local time.

On January 19, an unannounced Pokemon will make its debut in Pokemon Go in Mega Raids. We’ll bring you more details as we learn more.

Plus, on January 19, Mega Venusaur and Mega Houndoom will begin appearing in Mega Raids. Mega Houndoom will be more powerful than normal from January 26 until February 8.

Spotlight Hours

There are four Tuesdays in January, which means there are four Spotlight Hour events to look forward to next month. Each event will take place from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. local time. Make sure to mark your calendar with these dates!

  • January 5 – Lillipup will appear more frequently than normal in the wild, and you’ll receive two times the normal amount of Stardust when catching Pokemon.
  • January 12 – Drifloon will be the featured Pokemon, and you’ll receive twice the normal number of experience points when catching Pokemon.
  • January 19 – Shroomish will be the star, and you’ll receive two times the normal number of Pokemon Candy when catching Pokemon.
  • January 26 – Phanpy will appear more frequently than normal, and you’ll receive two times the normal number of Pokemon Candy when transferring Pokemon to Professor Willow.

Pokemon Region Celebrations

Leading up to the Pokemon Go Tour: Kanto event in February, different weekly events focused on the Unova, Sinnoh, Hoenn, and Johto regions of the Pokemon universe will be held in January. As part of these events, Pokemon from the different regions will appear more frequently than normal in the wild. For instance, during the Unova Celebration event, Pokemon from the Unova region will appear more frequently than normal in the wild.

The Unova Celebration event will begin on January 5 at 10 a.m. local time.

In its announcement, Niantic, the developer of Pokemon Go, didn’t provide any additional details about these events, but we’ll make sure to let you know when it does.

Collection Challenges

A new “Collection Challenges” feature will be added to Pokemon Go in “early January.” In a news post, Niantic said these challenges will “provide a handy guide to catching Pokémon featured during certain events.” We’ll make sure to bring you more details about these challenges as they’re revealed.
