You can carry your progress into the full game.

Nintendo originally released the adventure role-playing game (RPG) Miitopia on Nintendo 3DS in 2017. Now, an updated version of the game is coming to Switch this May.

If your family didn’t play the 3DS version of Miitopia, or you just want to see what’s changed for this Switch release, you can now try the Switch version of Miitopia for free by downloading the game’s demo from the Nintendo eShop.

In Miitopia, players start by creating one of Nintendo’s “Mii” characters to represent themselves in the game, or by selecting a Mii that’s already on their Switch. They can also choose from a variety of “Look-Alike” Miis.

From there, they can begin the game, which will challenge them to work together with other Miis to battle monsters and eventually defeat the Dark Lord, who has gone around the world of Miitopia and stolen Miis’ faces and given them to monsters. (This setup is goofy and lighthearted, rather than dark and gorey.)

As players progress through the game, they’ll be able to customize the appearance of other Mii characters in the game’s story (including the Dark Lord). Players can create Miis that look like their own friends and family or use their imagination to create someone new. Players can also share and receive Mii characters online if they have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Finally, players can stick with the game’s default Miis if they don’t want to create their own characters.

The game allows players to assign jobs to Miis on their team, which determines what they can do in battle. Battles themselves are turn-based, and allow players to use attacks, special skills, or items on each turn. Players can control their own character manually, but their teammates will choose their own actions on their turns. As players win battles, they’ll earn experience points and will level up over time, allowing them to become stronger. Plus, once a monster is defeated, its face will return to the original Mii owner.

In addition to battling monsters, players can complete quests, help their Miis become friends (for instance, they can send two Miis on an outing), and even befriend a customizable horse that will join them on their journey.

Finally, Miitopia will support Nintendo’s amiibo figures. When you activate certain amiibo figures in the game — like Mario or Isabelle — you’ll receive a Mii character outfit that allows your Miis to dress up like that figure. Using any other compatible amiibo figure will give you Game Tickets, which you can redeem at the Arcade to earn in-game goodies.

Miitopia will be released on Switch on May 21 for $49.99. The game is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB. If you play the game’s demo, your progress will carry over into the final game if you choose to purchase it.
