Ark: Survival Evolved is new on Switch and, if you've never played it before, we've put together a guide for what you need to do to level up quickly and unlock new Engrams.

What is Ark: Survival Evolved?

Ark: Survival Evolved is a lightweight survival game. Players are stranded on an island full of roaming dinosaurs (and other prehistoric creatures), natural hazards, and human players with unknown motives. The game has been out for a number of years on other platforms, but has only recently come to Nintendo Switch. If you’ve never seen Ark before, it’s a lot like Minecraft, but with better graphics and, well, dinosaurs.

In Ark: Survival Evolved, you have to move quickly in order to build weapons and survive, so we’ve created a guide that will allow you to do just that: level up quickly and survive.

How do I gain experience quickly on the Nintendo Switch version?

Engrams are a vital part of the Ark: Survival Evolved experience as they directly affect what items you can craft and build, which is why learning how to level up quickly is going to be important for new players just diving into Ark: Survival Evolved on the Nintendo Switch. To help you out, we’ve put together a list of several things you can do to increase the amount of experience you’re gaining so you can unlock more Engrams and upgrade your stats.

Collect Resources

One of the first things that you’ll want to do to gain experience in Ark: Survival Evolved is focus heavily on gathering materials. Things like Thatch, Stone, and Wood are all items that you need quite a bit of as you build up your base in Ark: Survival Evolvedand having plenty of resources on hand is going to be essential early on. On top of that, though, this is also one of the best ways to level up, as you earn a decent chunk of experience just from gathering items.

Craft Items

Once you reach Level 5 and unlock the Engrams for Storage Boxes, you can actually start crafting them to earn experience. Of course, you only need so many Storage Boxes, so craft a few, then continue gathering materials and planning for your base. On top of Storage Boxes, once you unlock the Engrams for Thatch building pieces, you can start planning out your base. You can then upgrade the pieces later on—or replace them entirely. Either way, it earns you a ton of experience along the way, making it easy to unlock new Engrams and get more points to upgrade your stats.

Tame Dinosaurs

As a game that focuses heavily on taming and collecting dinosaurs, it shouldn’t be a surprise that taming is a great way to level up and gain experience in Ark: Survival Evolved. While it will take a little longer than other activities like hunting dinos or even building things, taming dinos can offer you a nice experience boost, giving you that extra leap forward that you need to progress to the next level. Not only is this helpful for gaining experience but taming the right dinosaurs can also allow you to gather materials a lot quicker, making your job even easier along the way.

Hunt Dinosaurs

Finally, the last thing that we’ll suggest for leveling up and gaining experience is hunting. There are a lot of dinos out there on The Island for you to come across, tame, and even hunt. Hunting is a great way to gather food and other important materials, while also earning yourself a nice heap of experience for your troubles. Just make sure you bring enough weapons and gear to stay alive, as dying to a Raptor while on the hunt is never a fun experience.

With these things in mind, you should now have a better grasp on earning experience and getting to higher levels in Ark: Survival Evolved.
