Animal Crossing: New Horizons Ordinances Guide

You can change your island to suit your preferences!

The Version 2.0 update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons added lots of new features and quality of life improvements to the game, such as the ability to place storage sheds around the island and add The Roost cafe to the Museum.

Ordinances are another new feature included in the game’s Version 2.0 update. Players can enact an ordinance on their island to cause their island’s residents to behave differently, to change their island’s economy, and more.

Check out our video guide below to see how to enact ordinances, or keep reading for the details!

In order to enact or dismiss an ordinance, head into the Resident Services building and sit in the chair on the right (the one in front of Isabelle’s workstation). Once Isabelle comes over to chat, select the “Review island features” option from the menu.

Then, choose “Discuss ordinances.” Isabelle will tell you that enacting an ordinance will cost 20,000 Bells.

You’ll have four ordinances to choose from: Beautiful Island, Early Bird, Night Owl, and Bell Boom. Each one will have a different effect on your island.

According to the Animal Crossing Wiki, here’s what will happen when you enact one of these ordinances (Isabelle will also give you details about each ordinance if you select it):

  • Beautiful Town – Villagers are more likely to water flowers, hybrid flowers are more likely to appear, you will no longer collect trash while fishing, and more.
  • Early Bird – Your animal friends will wake up earlier and shops will open earlier in the day.
  • Night Owl – Your animal friends will stay awake longer and shops will remain open longer each day.
  • Bell Boom – Shops will sell items for higher prices, but players will also receive more Bells for the items they sell to shops.

You can learn more about each of these ordinances on the Animal Crossing Wiki.

Once you’ve selected the ordinance you want to enact, Isabelle will collect your 20,000 Bells, and the ordinance will go into effect the next day!

If you ever want to change the ordinance you have in effect, simply return to the Resident Services building and talk to Isabelle again.

And that’s all there is to it!
